KNITSILK Recycled Newspaper Yarn, Multicolored, Chunky, Hand Twisted, 100g per pack
RECYCLED MATERIALS · CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES
🧶 Yesterday’s Stories, Tomorrow’s Handmade Treasures
Turn printed paper into something worth keeping. KnitSilk Recycled Newspaper Yarn brings sculptural texture, scattered colour and the character of newspaper print to your creative work.
Imagine holding an irregular, hand-twisted strand, following its printed fragments as you shape a small basket or add texture to a wall hanging. This is a paper-based craft material with its own personality, rather than a soft garment yarn.
Try small decorative baskets, woven wall art, wrapped bangles and dry-use decorative mats. Start with a sample to explore bending, tension and joining before committing to a larger piece. Yarn only; finished projects and accessories are not included.
🌿 Key Characteristics
- 📰 Recycled newspaper material with visible printed character.
- 👐 Hand-twisted construction and an irregular chunky texture.
- 🎨 Grey-beige and black printed tones with scattered coloured flecks, as shown in the supplied photograph. Individual hanks may vary.
- 🧺 Best approached as a textural craft material for decorative projects.

The 8 mm needle and hook suggestions are approximate starting points based on the described chunky construction, not manufacturer-tested sizes or a guaranteed gauge. Paper cord thickness and flexibility vary. Use relaxed tension, check that stitches slide freely, and try a larger tool if the yarn catches or needs force. Stop if the strand tears. Choose the final tool size to suit your sample and project.
🎨 Creative Uses & Project Ideas
Tap a project below to explore an approach. These are starting ideas, not tested patterns or guaranteed yields.
🧺 Small decorative basket
Explore weaving around a simple removable form or coiling over a suitable core. Test a small base first, add rows gradually and secure ends neatly. Keep the basket for lightweight, dry decorative objects. Load capacity and food-contact suitability are not established.
🖼️ Textured wall hanging
Use newspaper yarn as an expressive weft on a small loom, with a separate suitable warp if needed. Experiment with open spacing and short woven sections, then mount on a dowel. Test how the strand behaves when bent or knotted; avoid pulling tightly.
⭕ Decorative circular mat
Try a small coiled sample, securing adjacent turns with an appropriate stitching thread. Keep the finished piece on a dry display surface. This is decorative inspiration, not a tested coaster, trivet or heat-resistant protector.
💍 Wrapped bangle or sculptural jewellery
Wrap short lengths around a smooth craft base and test a suitable adhesive on an offcut before use. Secure ends and allow any adhesive to cure according to its instructions. Avoid water and prolonged skin contact if the print or finish transfers during testing.
🧵 Mixed-media art and experimental knitting
Add printed texture to collages, sculptural samples or open knitted panels. Work gently and allow space in the stitches. Make a swatch before selecting tools; this material should not be assumed to behave like stretchy wool or washable cotton.
🌱 Sustainability Story
The existing product information describes this yarn as made from Indian newspapers by a women’s co-op, creating another use for discarded paper and supporting the makers’ livelihoods. Its appeal is the creative reuse of a familiar material. No independent environmental certification, waterproofing treatment or complete life-cycle assessment is supplied.
🔍 How This Yarn Compares
- Compared with wool: choose it for paper texture and sculptural exploration rather than assuming wool-like softness or elasticity.
- Compared with cotton: do not assume the same washability or wet strength.
- Compared with jute cord: newspaper print brings a different visual surface; test strength rather than treating it as a load-bearing substitute.
- Compared with conventional paper strips: its twisted strand format offers another route into weaving, wrapping and fibre art.
🫧 Care & Working Guidance
- 🏠 Prefer dry indoor decorative use.
- 🪶 Dust gently with a soft dry brush. No verified wash-care instructions are available.
- 💧 Do not assume water resistance. Avoid soaking and test print transfer on a small sample.
- 🔥 Keep away from flames and heat sources; heat resistance has not been established.
- ✂️ Test joins, bends, tension and finishing on an offcut before making a larger project.
- 👶 Craft components and finished samples are not presented as child-safe toys.
👋 Who Is This For?
- Fibre artists exploring unusual materials.
- Weavers seeking printed texture in small decorative work.
- Mixed-media makers working with reclaimed paper.
- Jewellery crafters experimenting with wrapped forms.
- Curious makers happy to swatch and adapt their techniques.
❓ How much yarn do I need?
Each 100 g hank contains over 80 yards according to the listing. There is no tested yield for the illustrated projects. Swatch in your chosen technique and measure consumption before ordering for a specific size.
❓ Can I wash it or use it outdoors?
Washability, outdoor durability and colourfastness have not been verified. Plan for dry indoor display and test a small sample first.

This is my 2nd order from this seller. First order had problems. 2nd order was much better. Glad I gave seller a second chance. Very happy this time! Will buy again!
I was looking for something to use in my basket weaving, and this turned out to be just what I needed! It isn't very stiff-- it holds its structure while still being a bit flexible. It definitely isn't flexible enough to be used in clothing, but it is really good for baskets, small tote bags/purses, etc. It's still very strong for newspaper, and I love that it's printed in Hindi!

I have not received this order. When is it coming. I ordered another, but I want the first order.
What interesting and super cool yarn! Made from newspaper somehow, guaranteed that no one else will have creations made from this great yarn unless they purchased here on Etsy from this seller, too!
Excellent, exactly what I wanted. Thanks very much!
