💇 Step 2: Choose Your Headband Style
Pick the style that suits your skill level and the look you want. All five are beginner-friendly.
Leave long ribbon ends and tie at the back or side. Most beginner-friendly. Fully adjustable.
Create a central knot or twist at the top. Shows the ribbon colour beautifully. Relaxed boho look.
Cover a plain headband with ribbon. Neat, structured, gift-ready finish. Great for gifting.
Ribbon front attached to elastic back. Stays in place all day. Slightly more sewing required.
Braid three narrow ribbon lengths together and secure the ends. Textural, colourful, statement look.
Focuses on Styles 1 & 2 (Tie + Knotted) — minimal equipment, maximum ribbon visibility.

Measure the Head
Wrap the measuring tape around the head where the headband will sit. Keep it comfortable, not tight. Add extra length for the tie, knot or overlap at the back. Test the position in a mirror before committing to a cut length.
Prepare the Ribbon
- Lay the ribbon flat and inspect the frayed edges.
- Trim only excessively loose fibres. Keep the raw frayed edge — it is part of the KnitSilk handmade look.
- If the ribbon contains a hand-stitched join, position it near the side or back of the headband where it will be most comfortable.
Make a Test Knot
Before using the full length, make a loose knot in a short ribbon sample. Check the ribbon does not crease sharply or pull apart. A soft overhand knot or simple bow works well. Avoid tight knots that may stress or damage the ribbon fibres.
Position the Ribbon
- Place the centre of the ribbon at the top of the head.
- Bring both ends down evenly toward the sides.
- Decide where the final knot will sit — back, side or top.
- Allow the ribbon to curve naturally. Do not pull it flat and tight.
Tie the Headband
2. Cross one end over the other.
3. Make a soft knot or bow.
4. Adjust position until comfortable.
5. Leave ends hanging or tuck gently.
Central Knot Option
- Fold the ribbon loosely at the centre.
- Make a soft overhand knot — keep it rounded, not flat.
- Place the knotted section at the top of the head.
- Bring ends around and tie or secure at the back.
Elastic Back Option
- Measure ribbon from one side of the head to the other (front section).
- Cut a comfortable elastic length for the back.
- Fold each ribbon end around the elastic.
- Secure each attachment point with multiple strong stitches in different directions.
- Test the fit gently before wearing — elastic should be comfortable, never tight.
Add Optional Decoration
One small bead near the knot.
Small gathered ribbon rose at the knot.
Discreet charm near one end.
Decorative cross-stitches along the ribbon front.
Narrow contrasting ribbon strip layered over the main ribbon.
A mini bow tied at one end or at the knot.
🎨 6 Design Variations
Leave frayed ends fully visible. Loose knot, relaxed styling. Let the ribbon’s colour shifts flow naturally.
Soft colour family, neat bow at the back. Understated and refined. A single ribbon, no embellishment.
Bright colour combination and a central knot. Bold, expressive, statement look.
Single ribbon. No embellishment. Let the colour changes speak for themselves.
Two narrow ribbon lengths in complementary colours worn together for extra width and depth.
Shorter length, secure fit. Avoid loose embellishments for young children. Test fit carefully.
