How to Wash & Care for Silk Yarn — The Complete Guide

🧶 How to Wash & Care for Silk Yarn — The Complete Guide

Silk yarn is one of nature's most luxurious fibres — lustrous, strong, and beautifully soft. But like all natural fibres, it requires a little extra care to keep it looking its best. Whether you're working with our KnitSilk sari silk, hand-dyed silk, or pure mulberry silk yarn, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

🌊 Why Does Silk Yarn Release Colour in Water?

This is one of the most common questions we receive — and it's completely normal! Here's why it happens:

  • Artisan & hand-dyeing process: Our silk yarns are dyed in small batches using natural, reactive, or acid dyes. While the dye bonds deeply to the silk protein fibre, a small amount of unfixed surface dye always remains after the dyeing process — especially in deep, rich shades like black, navy, burgundy, and forest green.
  • First wash bleed is normal: During the first 1–3 washes, this surface dye will wash out. This does not mean the yarn is poorly dyed — it is a characteristic of all deeply saturated, artisan-dyed natural fibres worldwide.
  • Silk's protein structure: Silk absorbs dye differently from synthetic fibres. The dye bonds to the amino acids in the silk protein, but water — especially warm or hot water — can loosen unfixed dye molecules.

After the first few washes, colour bleeding will stop completely.

🧴 Why Might Dye React with Sensitive Skin?

Some customers with sensitive skin or dye allergies may notice mild skin reactions when handling freshly dyed yarn, particularly when it is wet. Here's what to know:

  • Wet dye transfers more easily: Unfixed surface dye is far more likely to transfer to skin when the yarn is wet or damp.
  • Sensitive skin & dye allergies:  acid dyes used on natural fibres can occasionally cause reactions in people with known dye sensitivities or allergies — similar to reactions from new dark-coloured clothing.
  • Pre-washing eliminates the risk: Always wash your yarn before use if you have sensitive skin. After the first 2–3 washes, the surface dye is fully removed and skin contact is safe.

⚠️ If you have known dye allergies, we recommend wearing gloves when handling unwashed, deeply dyed yarn.

✅ Silk Yarn Washing Instructions

  • 🌡️ Always use cold or lukewarm water (max 30°C / 86°F) — hot water causes colour bleed and fibre damage
  • 🧼 Use a gentle, pH-neutral soap — baby shampoo, wool wash, or silk-specific detergent
  • 🚫 Never use bleach, enzyme-based detergents, or fabric softeners
  • ⏱️ Do not soak — a quick 2–3 minute gentle wash is sufficient
  • 🎨 Wash dark colours separately for the first 3 washes
  • 🙌 Hand wash only — machine washing can damage the silk fibre structure
  • 💧 Do not wring or twist — gently press out excess water and roll in a clean towel
  • 🌬️ Dry flat in shade — avoid direct sunlight which can fade silk colours
  • 🧺 Do not tumble dry

🧶 Care Tips for Finished Silk Projects

  • Store finished silk items folded in breathable cotton bags — avoid plastic
  • Keep away from direct sunlight for long-term storage
  • Steam block rather than wet block for best results
  • Use a cool iron on the reverse side if needed
