FREE CHRISTMAS SERIES · PATTERN 03
🎄 Layer the loops. Let the tails flow. Make the tree your own.
A ribbon topper brings colour and movement to the highest branches without needing a complicated shape. This free tutorial builds a layered bow from folded ribbon lengths, a firmly secured centre and a pair of flowing tails.
Choose the textured character of KnitSilk Dupioni Satin ribbon for the main bow, then add a light mulberry silk chiffon-gauze accent for a softer finish. Start with a small trial: the actual ribbon in your hands should decide the final proportions.
✨ Your quick project plan
Technique: form folded loop pairs, layer their centres, add tails and conceal the tie with a centre wrap.
Skill: confident beginner estimate. Time: about 30–60 minutes after gathering supplies, not a tested completion time. Size: the source suggests about 25–30 cm / 10–12 inches wide; actual size and fullness vary.
Free tutorial, not a finished item or kit. The supplied poster is illustrative, not a photograph of a physically constructed sample. The measurements and assembly method have not been verified with the linked ribbons.

🧵 Real KnitSilk ribbon options
These photographs come from the actual listings. The poster’s champagne, burgundy and emerald palettes are inspiration, not exact matches. The Dupioni Satin descriptions reviewed here do not confirm fibre percentages or wired edges. Do not assume the product name means verified pure silk.

| Ribbon | Listing details | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Dupioni Satin sets above | 1.5 inches / approximately 3.8 cm wide; 3 × 7 yards, total 21 yards per set. | Photos show soft textured ribbon with raw-looking edges, not the poster’s gold-edged wired appearance. Composition and wired edges need confirmation. |
| Optional mulberry chiffon gauze | Natural ivory mulberry silk ribbon, 25+ yards. | Width unspecified. A flowing accent, not a guaranteed structural substitute. |
🤍 Optional mulberry silk chiffon-gauze accent

Try a loose centre accent or additional flowing tail after testing. Delicate gauze should not carry the weight of the main bow. Extra gauze is not included in the cutting table.
Tools & supporting materials
- Ruler, sharp scissors and small clips.
- Strong thread and a suitable needle, or floral wire for the centre.
- A separate secure rear attachment tie suited to your tree branch.
- Optional lightweight decorative picks or centre ornament.
- Optional compatible craft adhesive, tested on an offcut. Stitching is an alternative; a glue gun is not required.
📏 Starter cutting table
The PDF suggests 2.5-inch / 6.3-cm ribbon for a bold topper, or 1.5-inch / 3.8-cm for smaller trees. The linked Dupioni Satin is 1.5 inches wide. Test one loop pair before cutting everything; shorten strips or use fewer layers if the narrow soft ribbon droops.
| Piece | Quantity | Length each | Example colour role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main loop-pair strips | 4 | 24 in / about 61 cm | Off White |
| Contrast loop-pair strips | 4 | 20 in / about 51 cm | Dark Red or Dark Green |
| Small accent loop-pair strips | 2 | 16 in / about 41 cm | Main or contrast colour |
| Separate long tails | 2 | 24–30 in / about 61–76 cm | Chosen colour |
| Centre wrap | 1 | 6 in / about 15 cm | Chosen colour |
These are estimates from the supplied PDF, not verified quantities for a fixed-yield kit. Allow extra for trials, attachment and adjustments. Size, fullness and consumption depend on the actual ribbon. Do not combine conflicting poster measurements with this table.
🪡 Seven making stages
The PDF contains abbreviated or collapsed headings after its first two stages. This written sequence expands them into a proposed complete method. It is untested: sample first and adapt the support to the ribbon.
1 · Trial a fold, choose colours and cut
Begin with one 24-inch main strip. Check how it bends and whether it forms a pleasing loop when pinched. If it collapses, test shorter lengths or plan a softer bow instead of copying the rigid illustrated silhouette.
Once satisfied, cut the remaining pieces. Keep tails and centre wrap separate. Test edge finishing on an offcut: a diagonal or V cut does not necessarily prevent fraying. Never flame-seal silk or unknown fibres.
2 · Fold the main loop pairs
Bring both ends of a main strip toward its midpoint and overlap them by about 1–2 cm, with the preferred face showing on the finished loops. Flatten the midpoint over the overlap so there is a loop on each side.
Pinch every centre layer together, keeping cut ends at the back. Hold with a clip or temporary thread tie. Repeat for the four main strips. One strip makes a left-and-right loop pair, not just one loop.
3 · Stack and secure the main bundle
Stack the four pinched centres, rotating each pair slightly so the loops fan around the middle. Keep raw overlapping ends behind. Adjust for balance.
Secure every structural layer with strong thread or floral wire, firmly but without cutting the fabric. Leave a separate rear attachment point. A decorative wrap alone must not be the structural tie.
4 · Add contrast and smaller accents
Fold the four 20-inch contrast strips into loop pairs and arrange them over the main layer, offsetting them to show both colours. Secure through the centre.
Fold and add the two 16-inch accents, then secure again. If the middle becomes too bulky or the bow droops, use fewer pairs or shorter strips rather than forcing every piece into the design.
5 · Attach tails and cover the centre
Put one short end of each separate long-tail strip behind the bow centre so both lengths hang down. Secure the ends into the structural tie. Check the drop against your tree before trimming the bottom edges.
Fold the centre-wrap strip narrower if needed, wrap around the pinched bundle and stitch its ends together behind, or use a small tested adhesive application. If 6 inches is too short for your assembled centre, cut a longer wrap rather than pulling against the ribbon.
Optional gauze accents are extra pieces. Attach gently without making the delicate gauze support the main bow.
6 · Shape and decorate
Open and distribute the loops carefully. Non-wired ribbon may settle into a relaxed shape; that is a different look from the poster, not a defect.
Add only lightweight accents, secured mechanically where practical. Fold wire ends inward, cover sharp points and remove loose threads without cutting the centre tie. Check fraying before displaying.
7 · Mount and check stability
Attach the rear tie to a suitable sturdy upper branch or support, following the tree manufacturer’s guidance. Do not rely on a weak tip or a loose centre wrap.
If it leans or pulls the branch, reduce weight or choose a stronger, lower mounting position. Keep the topper away from bulbs, electrical cables and heat sources. Keep tails clear of walkways, children and pets.

The PDF includes starter measurements and abbreviated tutorial headings. Use it alongside the expanded written steps, not as a separately tested pattern. Record the lengths and attachment method that work with your actual ribbon.
🎨 Three colour directions
Classic contrast
Try Off White main loops with Dark Red accents and tails. These are the actual listing names, not an exact champagne-and-burgundy match.
Green & red
Combine Dark Green and Dark Red. For a small tree, trial fewer pairs and shorter tails rather than scaling everything blindly.
Soft ivory movement
Add a mulberry chiffon-gauze accent to an Off White bow. Let it drape rather than expecting rigid loops.
Smaller versions can dress wreaths, gift boxes and door displays. Keep all fabric decorations away from candles and heat, including on festive tables. No variation has a verified finished size or yield.
✅ Finishing checklist
- The structural centre tie holds every layer; the wrap only conceals it.
- Tails are secured individually without pulling the bow off balance.
- No exposed wire, loose picks or adhesive strings remain.
- The support holds the topper without stressing the branch.
- Ribbon stays away from heat and electrical components.
- Record adjusted lengths and photograph the front and side for next time.
❓ Free-pattern questions
Can I use non-wired ribbon?
Yes, as a soft-bow adaptation, but expect less upright volume. Trial shorter loops, fewer layers or a separate suitable support. The linked Dupioni Satin listings do not confirm wired edges.
Are the Dupioni Satin ribbons confirmed 100% silk?
The reviewed listings do not state fibre percentages. Ask for composition if silk content is essential. The separate chiffon-gauze listing explicitly describes mulberry silk.
Will one set make a topper?
The sets list 3 × 7 yards, but no topper yield is tested. Colour allocation, sampling, joins and adjustments change consumption. Plan from a trial before treating any pack as a kit.
Will it look exactly like the poster?
No exact result is promised. The poster is illustrative and shows different apparent widths, edging and structure. Expect a softer result from the photographed ribbons unless suitable support is established.
Can I wash the assembled decoration?
Do not assume it is washable. Ribbon, wire, glue and picks can have different care requirements. Check each component before cleaning and store gently in a roomy dry box without crushing.
⚠️ Decorative craft safety
This is a decoration, not a child-safe toy. Keep ribbon, long tails, wire, scissors and small accents away from children and pets. Use hot glue carefully on a heat-safe surface or stitch instead. Never flame-seal silk or unknown fibres.
Keep decorations away from candles, heaters and hot lamps. Do not obstruct electrical fittings or allow wire to touch exposed electrical parts. Use stable access when decorating and ask for help rather than overreaching.
Choose your palette. Make one trial. Build your festive bow.
