🧵 1. Knitting Needle Types

Choosing the right needle makes a real difference when you’re knitting with silk yarn, which tends to be slippery and smooth.

🧵 Straight Needles
Best for flat knitting — scarves, swatches, dishcloths. Great for beginners learning knit and purl rows. Use bamboo or wood for better grip with silk.
🔵 Circular Needles
Works for both flat and in-the-round knitting. Essential for larger projects. The cable holds the weight of the yarn comfortably.
🧵 Double-Pointed Needles (DPNs)
For small circumferences — socks, sleeves, cuffs. Used in sets of 4 or 5. Intermediate skill level recommended.
🔄 Interchangeable Needles
Tips that screw onto cables of varying lengths. Highly flexible and ideal once you’re knitting a range of project types.
💡 Silk tip: Bamboo or wooden needles grip silk better than metal. If your yarn is sliding off the needle tips, switch to a less slippery needle material.

📏 2. Yarn Weight & Needle Size Guide

Yarn weight determines how fine or thick your knitted fabric will be. Here is the standard weight system with recommended needle ranges — always swatch first, especially with silk, which behaves differently from wool.

Weight Common Name Gauge (4” / 10cm) Needle Size (mm) Common Projects
0 Lace Lace 33–40 sts 1.5–2.25 Shawls, fine garments
1 Super Fine Fingering 27–32 sts 2.25–3.25 Socks, baby items
2 Fine Sport 23–26 sts 3.0–3.75 Light garments
3 Light DK 21–24 sts 3.75–4.5 Sweaters, accessories
4 Medium Worsted / Aran 16–20 sts 4.5–5.5 Sweaters, hats, blankets
5 Bulky Bulky 12–15 sts 5.5–8.0 Hats, scarves, home décor
6 Super Bulky Super Chunky 8–11 sts 8.0–12+ Throws, rugs, quick projects
🧵 KnitSilk 4NM Silk Yarn
Approximately 400 yards / 100g. Very fine, lustrous yarn. Start around 3.25–4.5mm for many projects, then swatch and adjust for your intended drape and gauge. Ideal for shawls, wraps, fine accessories and lightweight garments.

🧶 3. Casting On

Casting on creates your first row of stitches on the needle. There are several methods — here are the three most useful for beginners working with silk yarn.

1️⃣ Long-Tail Cast On
The most versatile method. Creates a neat, slightly stretchy edge. Slightly trickier to learn but worth the effort — this is the cast-on most knitters use daily.
2️⃣ Knitted Cast On
The most beginner-friendly. You knit each stitch onto the needle. Slower but intuitive and great for learning the knit motion before you begin.
3️⃣ Cable Cast On
Firm and stable. Good for edges that need structure, like button bands or bag openings. Works well with slippery silk as it holds its shape.
💡 Silk tip: Silk yarn is smooth and can slip off the needle during cast-on. Cast on more loosely than you normally would, and keep stitches pushed toward the middle of the needle, not near the tips.

🧵 4. Basic Knitting Stitches

All knitted fabric is made from just two stitches: knit (K) and purl (P). Every stitch pattern in the world is a combination of these two.

🧵 Knit Stitch (K)
Insert needle front to back, wrap yarn around, pull through, slide old stitch off. Creates a V-shaped face on the front.
🧵 Purl Stitch (P)
Insert needle back to front, wrap yarn around, pull through, slide off. Creates a bump on the front. The reverse of knit.

Common Stitch Patterns

Garter Stitch
Knit every row (when knitting flat). Produces horizontal ridges. Lies flat — great for scarves and borders. Your first project fabric.
Stockinette
Knit one row, purl one row (flat). The classic smooth V-face fabric used in most garments.
K1P1 Ribbing
*Knit 1, purl 1* across. Alternating columns of knit and purl create stretchy, elastic fabric. Used for cuffs, hems and necklines.
K2P2 Ribbing
*Knit 2, purl 2* across. Wider columns, slightly more structured. Also elastic and great for garment edges.

📈 5. Increasing Stitches

Increases add stitches to make your fabric wider — shaping sleeves, shawls, yokes and more.

M1 / M1L / M1R
Make 1 — lift the bar between stitches and knit into it. M1L leans left; M1R leans right. Nearly invisible increase.
KFB
Knit Front and Back — knit into both the front and back of the same stitch. Creates a small bar on the fabric. Easy and reliable.
YO (Yarn Over)
Wrap yarn over needle. Creates a decorative eyelet hole as well as an extra stitch. Used in lace patterns.

📉 6. Decreasing Stitches

Decreases remove stitches to narrow your fabric — shaping necklines, crown decreases and darts.

K2tog
Knit Two Together — insert needle through two stitches at once and knit them as one. Leans to the right.
SSK
Slip, Slip, Knit — slip two stitches knitwise one at a time, then knit them together through back loops. Leans to the left.
P2tog
Purl Two Together — the purl-side equivalent of K2tog. Used when decreasing on wrong-side (purl) rows.

🧵 7. Binding Off (Finishing the Edge)

Binding off secures your stitches so the fabric can’t unravel once it leaves the needle.

Knit Bind Off
Knit 2 stitches, pass the first over the second. Repeat. The most common method. Bind off in pattern for ribbing (knit the knits, purl the purls).
Stretchy Bind Off
Knit 2 together through back loops, slip back to left needle, repeat. Ideal for necklines, sock cuffs and any edge that needs elasticity.
💡 Silk tip: Bind off loosely. Silk has minimal stretch and a tight bind-off can make garment openings rigid. Go up a needle size for the bind-off row if needed.

🧶 8. Finishing Techniques

Weaving in Ends
Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and weave through several stitches, changing direction at least once before trimming. Silk tails need extra weaving to stay secure.
Blocking
Wet or steam blocking sets the final shape of your knitted piece. For silk, use cool water, press gently between towels, then lay flat to dry. Avoid high heat and direct sunlight.
Mattress Stitch
An invisible seam for joining knitted panels side to side. Work from the right side using a tapestry needle. The seam nearly disappears into the fabric.
Adding Fringe or Pompoms
Fringe is cut lengths of yarn looped and knotted at the edge. Pompoms are wound yarn trimmed into a ball. Great finishing details for scarves and shawls in sari silk.

✨ 9. Silk-Specific Knitting Tips

🧵 Relax Your Tension

Silk has less elasticity than wool. Hold yarn loosely and do not grip the needles tightly. Let the fabric drape naturally.

💧 Silk Can Slip

Smooth silk slides off metal needles easily. Use bamboo, wood or coated needles, especially when learning. Keep stitches toward the middle of the needle.

🌈 Embrace Colour Variation

KnitSilk Recycled Sari Silk features intentional colour, texture and thickness variation. Let these changes happen naturally — they are the design, not errors.

📏 Swatch First

Always knit a swatch with silk before beginning a sized project. Silk drapes and grows differently from wool. Swatching saves heartbreak later.

🧻 10. Care for Your Knitted Silk Pieces

✅ Do

  • Hand wash gently in cool water where the label permits
  • Use mild detergent for delicate fibres
  • Press gently between dry towels
  • Lay flat to dry in shape
  • Store folded in a breathable bag

❌ Don’t

  • Wring or twist
  • Machine wash or tumble dry
  • Expose to high heat or direct sunlight
  • Hang to dry (silk stretches when wet)
  • Use bleach or harsh detergents
