📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Measure

Wrap the measuring tape comfortably around your wrist. Add 2–4 inches for braiding take-up, finishing and the closure. Add more if you want a loose tie bracelet. Cut three equal ribbon lengths at this measurement.

💡 Before cutting all three: Make a short test braid with your ribbon to check how much the braiding shortens the length. The tighter the braid, the shorter the finished bracelet.
2

Prepare

  1. Align the three ribbon ends evenly.
  2. Secure the aligned end with a clip, safety pin, or a few small temporary stitches.
  3. Attach the clip to a stable surface — a cushion, foam board or your knee works well.
💡 Trim only excessively loose fibres from the cut ends. The natural frayed edge is part of KnitSilk Ribbon’s handmade character — leave it.
3

Braid

Separate your three ribbons — left, centre, right.

Step A: Move the LEFT strip over the CENTRE strip.
Step B: Move the RIGHT strip over the new CENTRE strip.
Repeat A → B until you reach the desired length.
💡 Keep the braid relaxed. Excessive tension shortens the bracelet and stresses the ribbon fibres.
4

Control the Look

🌊 Flat Braid
Keep all three ribbons lying flat as you braid. Result: wider, softer, more textile-like bracelet.
🫛 Twisted Cord
Allow the ribbons to roll and twist naturally. Result: narrower, more rope-like, structured bracelet.

Let the ribbon’s natural colour changes and frayed texture remain visible — they are the design.

5

Check the Fit

Wrap the braid around your wrist before finishing.

Too short?
Loosen the braid gently along its length, or restart with longer ribbon strips.
Too loose?
Gently tighten tension evenly along the full braid length.
6

Finish

  1. Align the three ribbon ends evenly.
  2. Secure with several small stitches using strong thread. Pass through all three layers at least twice.
  3. Trim only excess loose fibres — keep the frayed character.
  4. Attach your chosen closure.
🔘 Button & Loop
Sew button firmly to one end. Create a ribbon loop at the other end sized to fit the button snugly. Test before wearing.
🔗 Tie Bracelet
Leave both ends untrimmed as loose ribbon tails. Tie around the wrist. Simple and adjustable.

🎨 Design Ideas

🐍
Bead Accent
Thread a large bead onto one ribbon before braiding for a focal point at the centre.
🌓
Contrast Mix
One light ribbon + two dark ribbons for bold contrast. Or all three in different colour families.
🔄
Double Wrap
Use longer strips (40–48 inches) for a double-wrap bracelet or a single long necklace.
🪡
Tassel Ends
Leave both ribbon ends long and loose for a boho tassel effect instead of a button closure.
✨
Charm
Attach a small charm at the centre or near one end before stitching the final closure.
🌈
Colour Blocking
Cut each ribbon from a different section of the multicolor ribbon to maximise colour contrast in the braid.

🔧 Troubleshooting

Bracelet too short: Loosen the braid tension evenly along its length, or restart with strips 2–4 inches longer.
Excessive fraying at cut ends: Secure immediately with a few hand stitches. Avoid over-trimming — fraying is part of the ribbon’s character.
Uneven braid: Slow down and maintain similar tension on each strip with every pass. Consistent pressure makes consistent braiding.
Ribbon separates at ends: Reinforce both the starting and finishing ends with multiple passes of strong thread through all three layers.
Closure feels weak: Add more stitches and test the closure by pulling gently before wearing. Use a thimble if needed for better needle control through layered ribbon.

🧻 Care Instructions

✅ Do
  • Handle gently
  • Spot-clean with cool water + mild detergent
  • Dry naturally, flat
  • Store away from rough surfaces
  • Inspect stitching and closures regularly
❌ Don’t
  • Wring or twist
  • Iron or expose to high heat
